Ring ring

The Trees/Garden of Jane Delawney post reminded me of another group that is well known because of a cover of one of its songs--one of the only four songs they ever released, on an EP--yet most people don't even know that what they think of as an original is actually a cover.

Who am I talking about? Well, let's see if these won't ring a bell (groan, I know).

Hanging On The Telephone (cover) - Blondie

No? Perhaps if heavy rock/metal is more your style, you'll recall this?

Hanging On The Telephone - Def Leppard

Still nothing? Well, I suppose we could try this:

Hanging On The Telephone (cover) - L7

And if you still live in the stone ages (like us) and don't have a DVR/Tivo and actually catch commercials once in a while, perhaps this will sound familiar:

Hanging On The Telephone-sample (cover) - Cat Power
I wish she'd do full versions of all these cover samples she does for commercials...

Who did the original? None other than The Nerves, a band who put out four absolutely perfect songs, parted ways (in some cases to form new bands...that also parted ways), but who's influence is still strong 30 years later.

Hanging On The Telephone - The Nerves

This is my personal favorite of the four. Still has a carryover flavor from the 60s beat.
