Two from the original mix tape (aka 'basement treasures'). I'm working on getting the playlist of the whole thing up on imeem. Meanwhile, these two never fail to appeal.

Not to sound like a curmudgeonly old timer, but they really don't make albums like they used to, and I suspect with the single download capability now, any hope of reverting back to the old ways of producing an album--you know, one that had a concept and all the songs hung cohesively together and you could listen to the whole thing and get a total experience, versus padding for hopefully a radio hit or two--is gone.
Here is a great old song off of possibly one of the single best albums of all time, as well as another superb example of the use of classical instruments in a modern (well, for the time!) song. I am not just talking about the use of the horn (lovely) or the spanish guitar riffs (also lovely) but the violin tremolos which completely and perfectly evoke a sense of nervous energy. BRILLIANT.

This is definitely not the best or even the best known song by Melanie. Really, what you should do is buy her greatest hits album which is just an absolute treat for the ears. I love the precociousness of the lyrics of this one, though, and, seriously, who hasn't felt like this?
