I Am Not I

I am not I.
I am this one
walking beside me whom I do not see,
whom at times I manage to visit,
and whom at other times I forget;
the one who remains silent while I talk,
the one who forgives, sweet, when I hate,
the one who takes a walk when I am indoors,
the one who will remain standing when I die.

Modern love

My favorite poem by Nader Naderpour.

Als das Kind Kind war,
ging es mit hängenden Armen,
wollte der Bach sei ein Fluß,
der Fluß sei ein Strom,
und diese Pfütze das Meer.

Als das Kind Kind war,
wußte es nicht, daß es Kind war,
alles war ihm beseelt,
und alle Seelen waren eins.

Als das Kind Kind war,
hatte es von nichts eine Meinung,
hatte keine Gewohnheit,

Masti

No one does Persian 'new poetry' like Naderpour. It's still as delightful as the first time I came across it over two decades ago.

That's what he said

Red, rosy, and ripe

You say I am mysterious
Let me explain myself:
In a land of oranges
I am faithful to apples
Elsa Gidlow

A Small Fruit Song - Al Stewart

Said the apple to the orange:
"Oh, I wanted you to come
close to me and kiss me to the core.
Then you might know me, like no other orange
Has ever done before."

Them no good, durn toes!

One of our favorite 'old spots' from the channel the kid watches. Read by Chris Meloni (of L&O:SVU and Oz fame). As a commenter notes, I'd feel better too, having him read to me by my bedside!

You can read the poem here.

But everything did

Tyler scuffs oak leaves to frisk
the scent walking through Malcolm X Park.
First date. The arms of our jackets
graze, sweet puff of romance. Then boom
I step on a syringe, the needle
quick as a pit viper hits my boot.

If this were a movie, I'd laugh, but I've got
works stuck into my read. "Jesus,
don't touch it," says Tyler, and whips out
his hankie to yank it.

"Please,
I'm fine," but he started to fuss,
hailed a cab, told the hack to drive fast,
got me home, sat me down to examine
The Foot; a scrap of red toe polish
left over from August, skin intact. Then
he held my foot in both hands.

"People say
Nothing Happened when they mean No Sex,
when the fact is every look counts. The sun
quivered in the wind outside whaling
the trees, and shimmered over the wall. When I met
Tyler's eyes in that witchy light, I breathed
off the beat and choked, like I was fourteen.

I used to be depressed all the time,
and romance, by the way, was not the cure.
I don't mind winter because I know
what follows. There are laws.

- Nothing Happened; Belle Waring

(It should be noted that, in genreal, I am not terribly fond of reading (or like) a lot of poetry in the English language, and am exactly the opposite about it in Farsi-- which is the reverse of how I feel about reading (and liking) prose in those same languages. I do like Belle Waring's poems quite a lot, though.)
