I started out making a list of the covers I liked that were notable not just for the different take on the original, but for the fact that the person ( or group) covering the song had done so, more or less, in their own distinctive style and voice. The list was noticeably skewed toward female vocals, so I figured, what the heck, let's put a gender spin on it and call it a theme.
There are about 7 or 8 songs on the list that are most definitely part of my top 15 favorite covers of all time, which should be fairly easy to figure out, since I've posted or mentioned them here before. (Oh, I think with the exception of one, because I never got around to posting something I wanted to, last month.) There are a few there that I'm not quite sure how I feel about, except that I go back and listen to them over and over, so there's something there that's attracting me, even I'm not exactly enamored of them.
I'll be uploading the originals of the covers as an update to the post sometime....when I feel like it, but they're none of them obscure songs, so I just may not.
P.S. I'm not sure how it plays on all the different browsers and devices, and I know a couple of people have complained about issues with the site itself (banner ad pop-ups and downloads, none of which I've experienced, but that's probably because my laptop is Fort Knox multiplied after the Clap Infection of 2008) but I am fairly in love with Grooveshark for both the breadth of songs I found there and its playlist feature which is very easy to use (the kid figured out how to use it on his own))--that is, I'm in love when it plays nice with me. For some reason, it's not liking my uploading mp3 versions of the last three songs (I think I know why, but man, imeem was never that picky!), so the last three songs in the overall list are only available through a youtube playlist right now, until I figure out how to get around what's bugging Grooveshark's ass.
Update: I got a nice little e-mail from their support and I've got two uploaded but the third is giving me trouble. I'm going to take it as a sign that there is just never going to be an acceptable Queen cover, even if I am momentarily deluded. (That's another nice thing about the playlist features, it updates on the fly if you edit it, wherever you've embedded it.)
