Both the covers were wildly popular in England at the time they came out (and I am pretty sure the Bow Wow Wow one was in the U.S. as well), and, of course, I thought they were so wonderfully different from anything else at the time, what with their beat and the rhythm (remember, I was, uh, single digits old, so I can be excused for thinking these bands had come up with something fantastically new...).
When I discovered the originals an adult, though? I confess, I abandoned the cheap imitations and went for the real things wih chewy, satisfying center.
I Want Candy - The Strangeloves
(Interesting tidbit: Bob Feldman, one of the members of the band, is Corey Feldman's dad. You could say his son took the words from this song to heart, albeit a little differently than his father intended)
I Want Candy (cover) - Bow Wow Wow
My Boy Lollipop - Millie Small
My Girl Lollipop (cover) - Bad Manners
