This was Cher's debut single, released around the same time as The Byrds' cover. It wasn't strange for artists in that particular decade to release covers of the same song simultaneously, especially on two sides of the ocean (and, heck, if you remember, they kept on doing it successfully for many years--see Terry Hall and Jane Wiedlan's little collaboration), and each version did top the other where it had hometown advantage, so it all worked out.
