Carrying on one of the themes of the previous post...
You know what the best thing is about getting older and [truly] wiser? (No, really; I'm not being sarcastic). It's that when it suddenly pops into your head (and a while after the fact) about how you completely misunderstood something said to you, you have a hearty laugh in amusement, and forget about it, instead of cringing in embarrassment and fussing about it, nursing a bruised ego, like you might have done a couple of decades ago.
Vive l'age!
You're So Vain - Carly Simon
The opening line is just fantastic, isn't it? Interestingly enough, I'm pretty sure I recall Simon saying in an interview I saw years ago that she overheard the line muttered by someone mocking someone else who'd just walked in, at a party she'd been attending. Which isn't surprising--pretty much a lot of songwriters get their best material or inspiration from some random stranger. (Two of my other favorite stories are Jimmy Buffett's 'The weather is here, wish you were beautiful', which he saw written on a bathroom stall somewhere in the Keys, and Marcy Playground's John Wozniak overhearing a girl talking about the ladies room at a nightclub smelling like 'sex and candy'.)
