There are some songs that I've always flat out maintained can never be covered to do them justice in my eyes, because the main reason I love the songs so is their original musical arrangement, instrumentation, and often the vocals as well. Eleanor Rigby fell into this category: the double string quarter, so deliberately and perfectly placed, and Paul's usual cheeky, boyish voice flawlessly blase in its recitative documentary tone on poor Eleanor are the what makes this song special. A cover would at best be a wanna-be, second-rate version, and at worst make a mockery of itself by probably being overly heavy handed.
Then I saw this. And I'm pretty sure I am going to cross off Eleanor Rigby off the "can never be covered" list.
P.S. If you can listen to this and not a move muscle--I'll give you leave to not do it right away, because you're probably just absorbing it--there is something seriously wrong with you. I'm just saying.
P.P.S. What a shame about Stuart Adamson. I wish people knew more of him than just the song 'Big Country'.
